A free Splitwise alternative that works offline
Splitwise is the best-known app for splitting shared costs, but its free plan now caps how many expenses you can add each day. If you just need to settle a trip, a dinner or a month of shared groceries without an account, here is an honest look at Kvit — including when Splitwise is still the better choice.
Why people look for a Splitwise alternative
- A daily expense limit on the free plan. According to Splitwise's own help center, free users can add up to 4 expenses each day; Splitwise Pro removes the limit (Splitwise: What is Splitwise Pro?, checked October 2026). Logging a whole weekend trip in one evening quickly hits that cap. Limits can change, so check Splitwise's current terms.
- Features behind Pro. The same page lists currency conversion and receipt scanning as Pro-only.
- An account for everyone. Splitwise is built around accounts and an online group. That is great for long-term sharing, but heavy for a one-off dinner with people you may not see again.
- No signal. On a hike, abroad without roaming or on a plane, an app that needs to sync is less useful than one that just works on the phone.

How Kvit works
- Create a bill and add the people in the group. Pick the currency.
- Log each expense: who paid, how much, and how it is split — equally, with custom amounts, or excluding people who didn't take part.
- See who owes whom. Kvit works out each person's balance and settles the group in at most N−1 transfers.
- Share the result as plain text in WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage or email. Nobody else needs to install anything.
Everything is stored on your phone. There is no sign-up, no server and no internet requirement. The method behind the numbers is explained step by step in How to split group expenses.
What Kvit costs, plainly. The app is free to download and shows ads. Adding expenses is unlimited; starting a new bill uses a credit — you get one free and earn more by watching a short ad. A one-time Premium purchase (no subscription) removes the ads and the credits.
Kvit is available in English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Polish and Lithuanian.
Which app fits your situation
| Situation | Better pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend trip, one person keeps the receipts | Kvit | Log 20+ expenses in one evening, no cap, no accounts for the others |
| Hiking or travelling without mobile data | Kvit | Everything is calculated on the phone, nothing to sync |
| Dinner or party with people you barely know | Kvit | Share the result as text; nobody installs anything |
| Flatmates sharing rent and bills for a year | Splitwise | One running balance that everyone sees and edits |
| Trip across several countries with mixed currencies | Splitwise Pro | Kvit keeps one currency per bill and does not convert |
When Splitwise is the better choice
Kvit is deliberately simple, and that is not right for every group. Choose Splitwise if:
- Everyone needs to add expenses from their own phone and see the same up-to-date balance. Kvit has no sync — one person keeps the bill.
- You share costs for months or years, like a flat or a household, and want one shared, running balance that everyone can check and settle up against.
- You mix currencies on the same trip and want them converted, or want receipts scanned and itemised (both are Pro features in Splitwise).
Kvit is the better fit when one person is happy to keep track: a trip, a dinner, a party, a ski weekend, a shared gift — especially offline or with people who won't install an app or create an account.
